High Pressure Viscometer

  • The High Temperature High Pressure Viscometer (HPV) is a rotation type viscometer.

Using this type of viscometers, it is possible to measure the viscosity or shear rate of both independent (Newtonian) fluids and dependent (non-Newtonian) fluids.

The HPV system has a wide operating pressure (up to 1500 bar, 27750 psi) and temperature (up to 200 °C) range.

    Application

    • Modeling of coiled tubing - flexible pipeline.
    • Simulation of deep sea conditions.
    • Simulate pipeline conditions and perform restart tests.
    • Yield strength – ultimate shear stress measurements.
    • Measurement of ultimate static shear stress (gel).
    • Study of the stability of oil emulsion.
    • Determination of absolute and dynamic viscosity.
    • Study of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

    Advantages

    • No contact of the working fluid with the sample.
    • Easy to use thanks to the pneumatic lifting platform.
    • Possibility of conducting restarttest tests to determine the ultimate static shear stress and yield strength.
    • Carrying out tests under dynamic conditions.

    Simulation of extreme conditions

The High Temperature High Pressure Viscometer (HPV) is a rotation type viscometer.

    How the system works

The rotation method is one of the newest methods for measuring viscosity, used not only for non-Newtonian, but also for Newtonian fluids. Non-Newtonian fluids change their viscosity depending on the shear rate. The viscosity range covers the entire volume from 5 to 100'000 mPa*s (cP) depending on the geometry used.

The HPV system consists of an installation frame with a high-pressure chamber - autoclave, a pneumatic lifting platform and uses the reliable, internationally recognized Haake Viscotester VT550 as a measuring tool. A small print is enough to measure. The overall dimensions of the viscometer are small: 45 x 50 cm. A thermostat is used to control the temperature of the high-pressure chamber. A PC with pre-installed RheoWin® control and data acquisition system is designed to ensure maximum ease of use of the system.

One of the main advantages of the viscometer is the ease of operation of the autoclave, achieved thanks to the built-in lifting platform. The autoclave is also equipped with a built-in separate sample container. This way the autoclave is protected from contamination. During the experiment, the second sample container can be cleaned and filled several times with a previously prepared oil sample. The required sample volume is extremely small - about 20 ml.

    Simulation of deep sea conditions.

With a wide range of pressure and temperature measurements, the HPV system can simulate extreme operating conditions such as deep sea conditions. In this way, accurate and reliable data can be obtained for all fluids whose viscosity depends on the fluid shear rate, e.g. crude oil and drilling mud.

    Specialized measuring sensors

The HPV Viscometer provides fast, easy and reliable fluid and mass measurements. All experimental data such as viscosity, yield stress, shear stress, shear rate and operating temperature are automatically displayed and can be read by the software. The absolute viscosity of the sample can be measured through the use of suitable geometry. With the help of vane sensors used in the system, it is possible not only to measure the yield strength, but also to carry out restart tests, measurements of the ultimate static shear stress and the study of oil emulsions. This viscometer can be adapted to perform various operations.

    Real-time charting

Complex problems such as automatic investigation of the flow behavior of non-Newtonian substances can be solved directly using algorithms built into the software. A connected PC provides the ability to program the experimental process, control the process in real time, and evaluate experimental data.

    Various test conditions

The viscometer is equipped with a wide range of factory settings and the ability to adjust the steps of changing the rotation speed. Torque measurement using a non-contact sensor provides high measurement accuracy, linearity and a wide measurement range.
