Four-ball friction machine
TRIBOTEST - TBI
The four-ball friction machine "TRIBOTEST - ChMT" is designed to evaluate the extreme pressure and anti-wear properties of lubricants
The test bench is designed for testing oils and greases for scuffing resistance and the ability to reduce wear of metal surfaces. For testing, a four-ball scheme is used - one ball rotates relative to 3 stationary ones. The properties of the lubricant are assessed by the diameter of the contact patch on the stationary balls. The smaller the stain, the better the lubricant protects against wear. "TRIBOTEST - TBI" is equipped with friction force sensors, which allow you to estimate the coefficient of friction in contact. The friction machine can also be used to evaluate the temperature resistance of lubricants according to GOST 23.221-84.
What materials can be tested- The four-width test scheme is one of the most common methods for assessing the extreme pressure and anti-wear properties of liquid and plastic lubricants. Liquid lubricants contain additive packages that should prevent wear and scuffing of metal surfaces. During contact, it is these additives that begin to work.
StandardsMethods for assessing extreme pressure and anti-wear properties are established by a number of Russian and international standards:
- 1. GOST 9490-75 “Lubricating liquid and plastic materials. Method for determining tribological characteristics on a four-ball machine"
- 2. GOST 32501-2013 “Lubricants. Determination of extreme pressure properties on a four-ball machine"
- 3. GOST 32502-2013 “Lubricating fluids. Determination of extreme pressure properties on a four-ball machine"
- 4. ASTM D 2266 – 01 “Standard Test Method for Wear Preventive Characteristics of Lubricating Grease (Four-Ball Method)”
- 5. ASTM D 2783 – 03 “Standard Test Method for Measurement of Extreme-Pressure Properties of Lubricating Fluids (Four-Ball Method)”
- 6. ASTM D 5183 – 95 “Standard Test Method for Determination of the Coefficient of Friction of Lubricants Using the Four-Ball Wear Test Machine”
- 7. GOST ISO20623 – 2013 “Oil and petroleum products. Determination of extreme pressure and anti-wear properties using a four-ball machine (European conditions)"
Thanks to the built-in heater on the test bench, it is possible to evaluate the temperature resistance of lubricants in accordance with GOST 23.221-84 “Method for experimental evaluation of the temperature resistance of lubricants during friction”
The stand is certified for compliance with the specified methods.
AutomationThe stand is controlled using a touch monitor. The process of starting and stopping the stand is automated. During testing, the force on the samples, the coefficient of friction and the temperature are recorded. Data is written to a file with *.csv or *.xls resolution.
